Chapter 1 - The Lonely Mushroom Troll
Once upon a time, there was a mushroom troll who lived deep in to the forests of Norrbotten. He made his home beneath the roots of a tall pine tree that spread wide across a sandy hill next to a gently flowing river. The water babbled softly in the autumn breeze.
High up inside the tree, he peered through a small window at the world outside, pressing his round little nose against the glass. He watched carefully as the sand trolls danced below. The ground shook, and clouds of sand swirled around them as their heavy feet and tails sank into the soft sand.
The mushroom troll gazed longingly at the dancing trolls. He wished he could join them; it looked like so much fun! But he knew he couldn’t dance—he might be crushed under their clumsy feet. They neither saw nor heard him. He felt so alone. Oh, if only he had a friend! he thought sadly.
As the midnight sun began to fade and autumn made its entrance, the soft light glimmered on the river, casting long shadows from the pines onto the blueberry and lingonberry bushes, whose soft, rounded forms reflected the light on their frosted blue and glossy red surfaces.
It was time for bed. He jumped into his pajamas, brushed his teeth, and was a good troll by washing behind his ears. After blowing out his kerosene lamp, he crawled into his cozy bed. Everything became quiet, cool, and dark.
While the little mushroom troll lay sleeping, he had no idea that a special event the following day would change the course of his life forever!
